NEVER TOO EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year. With the kids jingle belling and everyone telling you be of good cheer…” … in October?  Since when has it become acceptable for stores to roll out fake, flocked trees, while simultaneously selling pumpkins and costumes for Halloween?  Most reasonable people would agree that October is a little too early to be sprinkled with red and green. Orange and black have not yet finished their brief stay.

And what about Thanksgiving?  Tables laden with food and fall colors of orange and brown and red?  Are these, too, next to be sacrificed to make way for wreaths and snowmen and stockings hanging from the fireplace mantle?

Lindsay Wyrick, 12th grade scholar at UME Prep, is against the early start to the Christmas season.  She notes that the timing in Christmas sales “...changed because big corporations want money.”  There is truth to that statement - the earlier the sales start, the more money will likely be spent.

But is that inherently wrong?  There’s many wonderful things to look forward to: parties, special food, smells of cinnamon and pine trees, and above all, Christmas music!  So until Halloween music (creepy and few songs that exist) and Thanksgiving music (nonexistent) can compete, we’ll just have to deal with seeing Christmas decorations creep into stores earlier and earlier.  Maybe next year we’ll be carving snowmen for Halloween. 11/7/16
