The year 2013, December 25, Christmas morning. Fourteen-year-old Madeleine Colvard and her six siblings all get up with the pure excitement that comes every year on Christmas morning. Unfortunately for them, they must first endure the tradition of eating cinnamon rolls for breakfast before they can open any presents.

After the cinnamon rolls had been consumed, the Colvard family moved to the living room for present opening. As the youngest five go first, Madeleine anxiously awaits her turn for her present. As her turn comes around she excitedly grabs her present from under the tree. The paper is torn off in a childish fashion to reveal what looks like a shoe box. With excitement of what she believes the present to be, she opens the box to reveal moccasins, the comfortable slipper like shoes she asked for.

“Thank you so much mom!” she cries with much gratitude as she puts on the shoe. However, through further investigation she finds there is only one shoe. “Um mom,” she says as the turned the box upside down, “there’s only one shoe.”

“What!? No there should be two!” her mom states with disbelief. Mother and daughter then proceed to check the box, the floor, under furniture, but the other shoe cannot be found. It is nowhere in the house. Eventually they go to the store and discover it on display. Yes, it was the display shoe.

Happily, Madeleine now has both shoes to comfortably keep her feet warm during the colder seasons.

With Christmas time approaching fast, the lesson to be learned from this holiday story is that when shopping for friends or family, always check to make sure there are two shoes. 12/12/16
