“All the world’s a stage,” could be the motto of the typical class clown.  Shakespeare’s words could easily describe those kids who are always “on stage” and ready to make you laugh - whether it’s with a joke, a spontaneous song, or an impression of Mr. Hunt.

What does it take to be a “class clown”? It’s not only a desire to be the center of attention, but also a self-deprecating sense of humor that is the common trait among these entertaining teens.  What would embarrass the average student, like spilling food on themselves, becomes an opportunity for these jokesters to make fun of themselves for a few laughs.  They have the uncanny ability to know when people are a little down and are in need of a good laugh to brighten their day - and they will be there with bells on...literally!

The entertainment world is probably full of people who were once voted “class clown” in high school.  Those who go on to act, sing, and entertain usually hone their skills during their youth.  But the business world is also a likely place for them to end up.  The skills of a class clown - ability to talk to people, projecting confidence, having an upbeat and optimistic attitude - are ones that business leaders have in common, too.

Lauren Horton, UME Junior, states, “Class clowns are always cheerful. You can count on them for a laugh or a smile on a rainy day.”  Although class clowns may be a distraction to students and a bane to teachers, they are the heart of high school and we should encourage them to use their powers for good! 11/14/16
