UME FOOTBALL:

Eagles Fight like Champions

by Mateo

On 9/16/16 UME Prep played Nazarene Christian it was a valiant battle.

It was Nazerine Christian’s homecoming and its football team, 24 players strong, was expecting an easy victory over the 13-man charter league’s first year team. As the players warmed up, they looked at the opposing side trying to figure out the other team's playstyle and star athletes. Before long the four UME Prep captains and the four Nazarene Christian players were in the middle of the field talking over the rules with the refs.

“Time to flip the coin,” the referee said. “UME you are the visitors. You call it in the air.”

“Heads!” senior Kevin Chandlee’s voice rang out as the coin flipped through the air in seemingly slow motion. The coin landed in the grass with a thud, and it was proclaimed that the call was indeed heads. UME Prep elected to defer to the second half and the game was under way. Nazarene soon scored first on a 40-yard run.

The Eagles defense did not give up and played hard the next play blocking the punt. Shortly after Kevin caught a long touchdown pass making the score 6 - 6. Kevin made the extra point and the eagles were up 6 - 8. Unfortunately, the UME Prep Eagles started making little mistakes and letting up touchdowns and soon the score was 34 - 8. The next half began and Senior Matt Fennig ran a 50-yard touchdown and Kevin made the extra point making the score 34 - 16. Nazarene scored again 42 - 16.

However, the UME Prep eagles didn't let up another touchdown the entire rest of the second half and even though they lost, it wasn't because of a lack of heart. 10/5/16
