When Giving Becomes the Best Gift

“Yes, why should I ask for something I will probably never use?” replied Brook. “If that’s what you want,” her mom sighed.

Her mom contacted someone who had a list of families in need. They got paired with a lovely family. Their story was that their son, Joseph, had leukemia, the dad lost his job, and the oldest child was working for her family. When Brook read the email, she cried. She could’ve cried a river if she wanted!

The next week the girl and her mom went shopping with a list that was given to them by the family. Brook’s uncle decided to join in the fun and bought presents for the family too! The girl and her mom went back home and started to wrap the presents.

On Christmas Eve, Brook, her mom, and her uncle packed all of the presents and gifts into her uncle’s truck and took them down to the family’s house. On their way to the house, Brook learned that Joseph was getting a puppy from a family friend. So she went and got presents for the puppy too!

When they got to the house, Joseph’s grandmother opened the door and started to cry. She started to thank them and hugged every single one of them. As they were moving the presents into the house, Brook got to meet Joseph’s brother and the puppy too. His eyes were shining with joy from all of the gifts that they were bringing in.

“Who wanted to do this?” the grandmother said half crying. “I did,” said Brook, “I already have everything I desire, so I wanted to give to a family in need.” The grandmother thanked and hugged Brook tightly.

When Brook, her mom, and her uncle left the house, she felt all warm and fuzzy inside for the whole day. Her family was so proud of what she has done. At the end of the day she found out that Joseph was strong enough to go to his house and open the presents! The mother sent Brook’s mom a thank you letter for everything they had done for them. She said that she insisted that Joseph name the dog after Brook, but he decided to name her Juneau. The girl inspired her uncle to start helping families in need. She and her uncle decided to do this every year from then on.12/12/16

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” the young girl hummed as she finished wrapping the last present in a less than skillful manner. She decided that since she already had “everything” she desired, she was going to give gifts to a family in need.

When the girl told her mom this, her mom was very surprised, “Brook, are you sure you want to do this?” she asked.
